Using PlaymobilPRO for business innovation

Business innovation is the development of a product, service, business model, or strategy that is both novel and useful. Innovations don’t have to be breakthroughs in technology or new business models; they can be as simple as customer service updates or features added to an existing product.

Innovation and creativity are often used synonymously. Although they are similar, creativity does not mean innovation. Creativity means bringing new ideas, a key component in innovation.

But for an idea to be innovative, it must also solve a problem. This is why creative ideas do not always lead to innovations.

When I mention Playmobil together with the word innovation, most people think that we use the toys to build prototypes and models, tangible things. However, in PlaymobilPRO we use the figures to build models that represent metaphors through which we tell stories. These stories reveal our previous knowledge and experiences, which we share with other players and allow us to better understand the problem we are trying to solve.

When we talk about innovation in business, most companies and leaders are not clear about the direction or the first step they should take. Regardless of which direction is chosen, a key criterion for innovation is that the process unlocks the potential of the knowledge that exists in our company, as well as the understanding of the current system.

In this process, the PlaymobilPRO method not only allows active meetings with 100% participation, but also allows unlocking and extracting the knowledge of the business that each of the participants have.

An example of this, is the use of PlaymobilPRO methodology in Design Thinking, where we use the figures to facilitate discussions for problem definition, user understanding, solutions ideation, prototype creation and testing, and organise research information. The results and depth of such discussions out stand the results of a typical blackboard/sticky notes meeting, where many of the participants are just joining from a passive perspective.

Whatever innovation methodology we choose for our company (Design Thinking, Six Sigma, among others), it is clear that we must explore beyond the already known patterns, activating individual and team knowledge, and finding a common interpretation between all stakeholders.
